Diagnostic Assessment Q&A

What is a diagnostic assessment?

A diagnostic assessment is a comprehensive evaluation that enables mental health professionals to understand a person’s experiences. It includes a review of your symptoms, personal history, and functioning in different areas of life.

Mental health conditions can sometimes have overlapping symptoms, such as trouble sleeping, mood changes, or difficulty concentrating. A diagnostic assessment helps sort out what’s really going on.

It ensures that you receive the most accurate diagnosis and the most effective treatment. NuMind Psychiatry uses this process to develop a clear path forward for each patient.

What happens during a diagnostic assessment?

The diagnostic assessment process typically begins with a one-on-one meeting with Dr. Rivas or one of his colleagues. They ask questions about your:

  • Current symptoms and how long they’ve been present
  • Medical and mental health history
  • Family history of mental illness
  • Daily habits, lifestyle, and any recent stressors
  • Social, work, or school challenges

Patients are encouraged to be honest and open. There are no right or wrong answers — just an opportunity for your provider to understand what’s going on and how to help.

Depending on what they learn, they may also ask you to complete an approved assessment tool, such as depression screening or a test for attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

How long does a diagnostic assessment take?

A complete diagnostic assessment typically takes between 60 and 90 minutes, depending on the complexity of the situation. In some cases, Dr. Rivas and his colleagues may recommend additional sessions or further psychological testing to gather more information.

Once the evaluation is complete, your provider shares their findings and discusses the next steps. This may include a diagnosis, recommendations for therapy, medication options, or further testing if needed.

At NuMind Psychiatry, patients are always part of the decision-making process and encouraged to ask questions.
